Landscape plant suitability analysis

Are your plants suited to this location?

Choose a location in Türkiye and add your plant list. KURAS assesses the local water need and winter suitability of each plant against the 30-year climate of the location and the scientific sources. Xeriscape guide →

Xeriscaping does not mean removing turf or high water-need plants. Why?

Xeriscaping is a matter of balance: the aim is not less green, but water used in the right place and only as much as needed.

  • Turf is limited to the areas where it is functionally needed; it can be used for play, rest and areas of intensive use.
  • High water-need plants are not excluded altogether; they are used sparingly and purposefully, grouped with plants of similar water need in the same irrigation zone (hydrozone).
  • Planting emphasises low and moderate water-need species suited to the site; species diversity does not have to be reduced.
  • Covering the site only with stone and gravel is not xeriscaping; large, unshaded mineral surfaces can raise surface temperatures. Under suitable conditions gravel can be used as a mineral mulch around plants.

Every plant has a function on the site: providing shade, improving the microclimate, protecting the soil, creating habitat or defining a space for use. If you enter quantities in the list, the irrigation zones section below the results shows how many plants fall into each group. Quantities do not show water use: a large tree uses more water than many small groundcovers. More in the guide →

Location

Choose a province on the map or mark your project site.

No location selectedA province is enough; a project site gives a more accurate result.

The climate data have a resolution of about 9 km; they do not show plot-scale microclimate.

Search by scientific name (Turkish names also work); choosing from the list gives the most reliable match.

Choose the location, add your plants and start the analysis. For each plant, local water need and winter suitability are assessed against the 30-year climate of the selected location.

Local water needA relative five-drop scale. Not litres; it is for comparing the plants in the same project.
Winter suitabilityThe cold hardiness of the plant is compared with the long-term winter minima of the location.
Overall resultWater and winter are assessed together. Drought tolerance is shown as separate information.
